How long does SEO
take to work?

A lone figure on a green hill at dusk

Most businesses see early SEO movement in three to six months and steady results in six to twelve. Technical fixes and Google Business Profile work can show within weeks.

Competitive searches take longer, and the results keep compounding after the first year as long as the work keeps going.

That is the honest range, and anyone who promises page one by next month is selling something else. Where you land inside it depends on where your website starts, how hard your searches are to win, and how consistently the work ships.

This guide sets out a realistic timeline, what speeds it up or slows it down, dated results from our own clients, and how to tell SEO is working before the leads arrive.

SEO is slow to start and hard to stop. The early months build the trust that later rankings run on.

How long does local SEO take?

Faster than most people expect in the map pack, slower in the normal results.

Map pack and Google Business Profile

Local SEO is usually the fastest kind. A complete, active Google Business Profile with the right categories, photos and a steady flow of reviews can lift map pack views within weeks, and clear gains often show within two to three months.

A Brisbane plumber we worked with saw 127% more Google Business Profile visibility in three months. In the owner's words: "Only about 6 weeks in and already getting results." Read the plumbing case study.

Local pages and reviews

Ranking in the normal results for a service and a suburb takes longer, because Google needs pages that answer the search and signs that locals trust you. Expect three to six months for most service areas, and longer in crowded markets.

A Gold Coast party bus company fixed its technical problems first. Its site health score climbed in stages from 37 to 65, and the ranking gains followed. Read the party bus case study. Our Gold Coast SEO work follows the same order: profile and fixes first, then pages and reviews.

Local results come first. Wider searches follow.
Why it takes time
Why SEO takes so long

Google has to find a page, index it and trust it before it ranks it well. Each step takes time:

  • Crawling and indexing: new and changed pages can take days or weeks to be picked up, and longer on a site Google rarely visits.
  • Relevance: pages need to answer what buyers search, which usually means writing new pages, not just tweaking old ones.
  • Trust: links, mentions and reviews from other sites build up over months, not days.
  • Competition: the businesses already ranking keep working too, so you are chasing a moving target.

Does AI search change the timeline? Not much. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers draw on pages that are already found and trusted, so the same groundwork applies. A Gold Coast equipment finance broker now shows up in ChatGPT and Gemini answers as well as in Google. Our guide to generative engine optimisation explains how that happens.

Early signs

How to tell if your SEO is working

Leads come last. These signals show up first, roughly in this order.
Check for these, in order
01.
Your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console
02.
Impressions rise in Search Console, even before clicks do
03.
Rankings improve on longer, more specific searches
04.
More views and calls from your Google Business Profile
05.
Clicks grow, then enquiries follow

How long SEO takes, in short

Weeks for technical fixes and Google Business Profile work. Three to six months for early movement in rankings. Six to twelve months for steady results on competitive searches. After that, the gains keep compounding.

A new website or a crowded market sits at the slow end. A site with some history and a clear local focus sits at the fast end.

Judge SEO on the right signal at the right time.

What moves it

What changes the timeline

Four things decide where your business lands in that range.

1. Where your site starts

A site with some history, clean technical health and pages Google already indexes moves faster. How long does SEO take for a new website? Usually longer, because Google is starting from nothing, so expect the slow end of the range.

2. How competitive your searches are

A trade in one suburb competes with a handful of businesses. A national lender competes with the biggest brands in the country. The harder the search, the more content and authority it takes.

3. Content and authority

Useful pages that answer what buyers search, plus links, mentions and reviews from trusted sites. This is where most of the time and budget goes, and our SEO cost guide breaks down what that work costs in Australia.

4. How consistently the work ships

SEO done in bursts keeps restarting the clock. A steady monthly rhythm of fixes, pages and authority is what carries a site through the slow early months.

You cannot change your starting point. You can change how steadily the work ships.

Is SEO worth the wait?

For most businesses, yes. Ads stop the day the budget stops. SEO keeps bringing in enquiries from work already done, so the slow start pays back over the years that follow.

Can you speed SEO up? Fixing technical problems first, a strong Google Business Profile and publishing steadily all help. Nobody can guarantee a ranking or a date, and a promise of either is a warning sign. Our guide on how to choose an SEO company covers what to ask instead.

Is SEO still worth it with AI search? Yes. AI answers lean on the same trusted pages, so the work counts twice. If you want it done for you, see our SEO and AI search service.
