How much does SEO
cost in Australia?

Most SEO packages in Australia cost between A$1,000 and A$3,000 a month. Across published package prices from 15 Australian agencies, checked on 14 October 2026, the median entry package is A$1,199 a month and the median middle package is A$1,990.

What you get for that money varies far more than the price.

SEO has no fixed price because it is not a product. It is a set amount of work each month: fixing the website, building pages around what buyers search, and earning mentions and links from other sites.

This guide uses the package prices Australian agencies publish on their own websites, collected in October 2026, and what we see running SEO for Australian businesses, to show what each price level really buys.

The price of an SEO package says little about what it delivers. Ask what share of the fee goes to content and authority, because that is where rankings come from.

What SEO costs in Australia

Published prices cluster in four bands, and each band buys a different amount of work.

Typical monthly prices

  • Entry packages: A$400 to A$1,000
  • Most small and medium businesses: A$1,000 to A$2,500
  • Competitive or multi location: A$2,500 to A$5,000
  • National, ecommerce and enterprise: A$5,000 and up

Of 44 published price points we found, 21 sat between A$1,000 and A$2,500.

How SEO is priced

  • Monthly retainers, the most common model
  • Set hours or credits each month
  • One off audits and projects
  • Packages sold by keyword count, which reward the wrong thing

Most agencies we checked now offer month to month terms rather than lock in contracts.

The cheapest package is rarely the cheapest result.
What you get
What each price level buys

From what Australian agencies list inside their packages:

  • Under A$1,000 a month: Google Business Profile updates, directory listings, light fixes on a few service pages and a monthly report. Usually little or no new content and no real link building.
  • A$1,000 to A$2,500: technical fixes, 5 to 15 pages optimised, one or two articles a month and some link building. Often sold as 5 to 16 hours of work a month.
  • A$2,500 to A$5,000: a content plan with copywriting, authority links and digital PR, competitor research and a monthly strategy meeting.
  • Over A$5,000: content at volume, 40 or more landing pages in scope, senior strategy, and multi site or international work.

The work that moves rankings is content built around what buyers search, and authority earned from other sites. Packages that leave both out are mostly maintenance. Our SEO and AI search work starts with those two, and our guide to generative engine optimisation explains how the same work gets a business named by ChatGPT and Gemini.

What else to budget for

The monthly fee is only part of the cost of SEO that works.
Budget for these as well
01.
A technical audit and fixes at the start
02.
Content writing, if the package does not include it
03.
Website changes your developer needs to make
04.
Tracking for calls, forms and bookings, so results can be measured
05.
Time from your team to approve pages and supply proof

What the right SEO buys: a finance broker

Millard Financial, a Gold Coast equipment finance broker, started with fewer than 10 indexed pages. Precise pages for more than 20 equipment niches took it to more than 3,280 keyword rankings, and organic users grew from 12 to 669 in twelve months.

The site now brings in 4 to 8 qualified calls every week, with no ongoing spend on acquisition. Read the Millard Financial case study.

Cost drivers

What drives the price up or down

Four things decide most of what SEO should cost.

1. Competition

The more businesses chasing the same searches, the more content and authority it takes to outrank them. A plumber in one suburb needs far less than a national lender.

2. Reach

One location is cheaper than many. Each new city or region needs its own pages and its own local signals.

3. Your website

A slow or poorly built site needs fixing before anything else works. That work sits in the first months and lifts the cost early.

4. Content and authority

How many pages need writing, and how many trusted sites need to mention you, decides most of the monthly fee.

Spend follows competition. Results follow content, authority and patience.

Cheap SEO compared with SEO that works

Patterns we found in published packages, and what to look for instead.

Warning signs/Guaranteed page one rankings/A set number of keywords for a set price/Hundreds of backlinks a month/A fee for each keyword that ranks/No access to your own data
Good signs/A plan tied to enquiries and revenue/Pages built around what buyers search/A few links from relevant, trusted sites/A clear monthly fee and scope/You own the accounts and the reports
If a package leads with quantity, ask what it will do for enquiries.

How much should you spend on SEO?

Spend enough to fund the two things that move results: content and authority. For most local service businesses that means A$1,000 to A$2,500 a month. Competitive and national markets need more.

Is A$500 a month enough? It can keep a Google Business Profile current and fix the basics, but it rarely buys content or links, so rankings tend to stall. How long until it works? Expect early movement in three to six months and steady results from six to twelve, which is why the monthly figure matters less than staying with the plan long enough to see it work.
